We're happy to announce that you have the chance to win one of five signed books by our panellist Aaron Balick ('The Little Book of Calm'). All you need to do to enter is attend the live webinar - best of luck!

It is hard to avoid news that is challenging, worrying and often divisive. So how can we support young people in approaching the news?

Many adults are choosing to ignore news at the moment as a wellbeing strategy. But children can't always avoid hearing about worrying problems or shocking stories from other places.

Bringing current affairs into the library or classroom can bring a range of benefits to learning, from engaging reluctant male readers and building vocabulary, to developing critical thinking and oracy skills.

In this webinar, we will explore the benefits of using the news in school and the positive effects of managing discussion in a structured way, encouraging critical thinking and fighting misinformation.

This webinar is suitable for primary and secondary school librarians and teachers. By joining live you will benefit from:

  • A practical demonstration exploring a current news story and dissecting how a difficult topic can be 'defused' and debated.
  • Explanation of The Day’s unique ‘Six Steps to Discovery’ framework of skills for inquiry learning, that staff can apply to speaking and writing activities, to support an education in which children are taught how to learn by finding out for themselves.
  • Free news resource pack to use in your school, along with the Six Steps to Discovery Framework.
  • The opportunity to put questions to our expert panel of speakers from education and journalism.

Speakers include:

  • Richard Addis, The Day’s Editor & Founder
  • Aaron Balick, psychotherapist, speaker, consultant
  • Helen Blachford, Bohunt Education Trust, Trust Subject Director of Personal Development
  • Alison Tarrant, SLA CEO
