Promoting Reading in the Digital Age: Taunton, Somerset, 7 March 2018

Our course Promoting Reading in the Digital Age, run by Bev Humphrey, will be held at The Somerset Centre for Integrated Learning, Cheddon Road, Taunton on 7 March 2018.

This course focusses on ways to encourage reluctant readers, build reading stamina and make reading ‘cool’ by using exciting online resources and apps to create a buzz around books in your school. All resources shown are provided in a handout to keep, with great video content, fantastic display suggestions and motivating electronic ideas you can use to really get your pupils switched on to reading for pleasure. Advice on how to use ebooks, QR codes and take part in live author events included.


Bev has run this course for the SLA on several occasions and the feedback has been excellent.  Comments include -

Opportunity at SLA - Publications Co-ordinator

The School Library Association is looking to appoint a new Publications Co-ordinator on the retirement of the current post holder, Geoff Dubber. The Publications Co-ordinator needs to ensure that the SLA’s publications are current, relevant and engaging for members and non-members alike. The successful applicant will have experience in school libraries and should possess excellent written communication skills, as well as boundless enthusiasm for supporting the work of the Association.

This is a voluntary position, which carries an annual honorarium.

Welcome to 2018 - this is just a brief reminder that you still have nearly 2 weeks in which to nominate a school librarian who is doing great things in your school for the SLA School Librarian of the Year Award. (Nominations close on 19th January.)

New Director for SLA!

Alison is an experienced and passionate professional librarian who is fully embracing the challenges faced by school librarians today. We are looking forward to working with Alison to carry on Tricia's work with the Association, campaigning for school libraries everywhere and continuing to provide our members with help, support and inspiration. Alison was a recent Honour Listee on our School Librarian of the Year Award - find out more about her here.

Information Book Award reminder for publishers

Iba Gold Sticker 150pxPublishers are reminded that there is still time to enter your books into the eighth annual Information Book Award in 2018.

The judges are looking for the best in information books that will stimulate interest, have an innovative approach and/or format, have child appeal, be up-to-date in approach as well as have value (for education and enjoyment) going forward.

The submission deadline for entries is 11 January 2018.

Full details on the criteria for entry and a submission form to complete are available to download from the SLA.

Teaching Skills for School Library Staff: Witham, Essex, 28 February 2018

Our course Teaching Skills for School Library Staff, run by Chris Powis, Head of Library and Learning Services at the University of Northampton, will be held at EES for Schools/School Library Service, 11 Freebournes Road, Witham, Essex CM8 3UN on 28 February 2018.

Delegates on this one-day participative course will build on current experiences of teaching information skills in libraries and learning centres.  Divided into five sessions, they will look firstly at the nature of teaching and learning before considering each step of the process – planning, delivering, assessing and receiving feedback.  Delegates will be involved with stimulating discussions and there will be the opportunity to share experiences so if you are working with young people, students, small groups of library users or staff this course will help you develop your skills as a teacher and trainer.

The closing date is 9 February 2018. Bookings received by 31 January 2018 are eligible for a £15 discount.

Bringing it Alive! Storytelling to boost Literacy and Reading for Pleasure: Sutton, Surrey, 7 February 2018


Our course Bringing it Alive! Storytelling to boost Literacy and Reading for Pleasure, run by Alec Williams , will be held at Heath Educational Books, Willow House, Willow Walk, off Whittaker Road, Sutton, Surrey SM3 9QQ on 7 February 2018. The closing date is 23 January 2018.

Aimed at primary school teachers and support staff, this course will build confidence in those who are new to telling stories and give fresh inspiration to those who are already practiced in it.

An early booking discount of £15 will be applied to all bookings received by 12th January making the cost for the full days training just £90.00 (SLA members), £120.00 (for customers of Heath Educational Books) or £150.00 (all others).  A second delegate attending from the same school (accompanying a full paying delegate) can do so for as little as £55.00 (SLA members), £65.00 (Heath Educational Books customers) or £75.00

Don't forget that nominations for School Librarian of the Year 2018 close on 19 January, so you still have time to recommend a colleague or friend for this prestigious award.

We are looking for librarians in primary or secondary schools who really enhance what their school offers to students. People who have a huge impact on learning and literacy, and ensure that the library lies at the heart of their school.

Help us to honour the excellent work that is carried out in school libraries every day, and highlight the best practice of those whose work is outstanding.
